"Who the...?"
"I GOT IT!" shouted Julian who was already running down the stairs.
Delilah knew her father wouldn't come back for another half and hour, depending on whether he decided to wander off to some random shop, so who was at the door? Sliding off her bed, Delilah poked her head out of her door and transformed into a wolf. She liked being an animal. It was like being in another world, yet everything around her was the same. Of course, having four legs might mean more balance, but going down stairs was trickier than it looked. Holding her body back as far as she could, she headed down the stairs, letting momentum move her centre of balance over the steps. As she jumped off the last step, two figures walked into her view. The one on the left was her brother who had a sly smile on his lips. The boy on the right was William, his best friend. His spiked brown hair was damp from running in the rain and the small glasses that sat on his nose had fogged up a bit around the edges. They had met on their first day at high school and have since been inseparable. William was a skinny kid that always had his nose in a math book or some complicated and boring looking text but that didn't mean he sucked at sports. He wasn't as fast of fit as Julian, but he was very agile, able to change directions so quickly it's a wonder why he hasn't broke his leg yet. But what could you expect from a ferret? A hand came out of his jean pocket and rested on Delilah's head. A friendly growl rose from her throat as he stroked the top of the wolf's head.
"Hey Delilah. Julian said I could come over today. That alright with you?" The tip of William's ears turned pink. William has always been a friend of Delilah, although a few weeks ago he let slip to Julian that he thought his sister was cute. Not that Delilah knew of course.
The wolf walked back from his hand and flicked her tail in an approving way. As the boys headed up the stairs, Delilah walked into the kitchen, following the scent of the almost ready soup. She walked in and sat down behind her mother. When's lunch? It came out as a high pitched whine. The pretty face of her mum faced her.
"What is it Delilah? If you're wondering when lunch is ready, then in half an hour. If you're hungry, then look in the fridge."
A snort came out of the wolf's nose. She walked away from the kitchen and headed towards the stairs once more. But as she lay a paw on the first step, a hollow bounce came from above. Looking up, Delilah had enough time to open her mouth and catch the stray tennis ball that was heading her way. Why do they treat me like a dog? She sighed.
The ball was uncomfortable in her mouth so she dropped it and walked up the stairs. A series of laughs came from behind Julian's door as she made her way past. Her ears folded back as the laughter increased. Turning into her human form, Delilah suddenly felt a burning sensation on her tongue. Running back down the stairs, she took a closer look at the ball as her mouth started to water. She picked it up and saw a faint reddish tint on the furry part. Cursing, she ran into the kitchen and grabbed the glass of the red cordial her mum prepared. Roxanne had a habit of knowing what was going on. Gulping down the liquid and swishing her mouth with the sweet flavour, the spicy taste of chilli paste was soon diminished to a low throb. The bubbling of the soup was just the same as how Delilah felt inside.
"They shall die." Delilah cursed
"Not today honey, not today. Why don't you go and cool off in your room? I think Julian would like his ball back, don't you think?" A smile warmed on Roxanne's face.
Looking at her mother's smile, Delilah felt a little better. Walking to the stairs, she picked up the tennis ball and started going up the stairs. Halfway up, Delilah stopped. She decided it was best not to leave her room. Continuing on, she heard snippets of Julian and Will's conversation.
"That was so tight...she's gonna be mad...party pooper...yeah I guess...what? No...I’m not stupid I can see you...and now we head down...new game I found...seriously..."
